PELIKAN M800 Souveran (umlaut over the "a") 14k EF gold nib, black, gold trim. Solid materials and sound engineering. Classic design with characteristic Pelikan distinctive trim, including pelican beak clip.

This pen has been lightly and carefully used for about 12 years, maybe more. It usually stays on or in my stand-up writing desk. I use Pilot Falcon pens for travel, daily carry, and sketching. I didn't keep the box and papers because I expected to write with this pem for the rest of my life.

You'll find faint signs of wear consistent with years of careful use and good pen maintenance. I like to use a good, robust, hefty fountain pen for my journal writing, personal letters, and for early drafts of manuscripts when I want a break from the computer. I've rotated between this Pelikan 800, another 800 just like it, and a now-discontinued Namiki Bamboo (not the current, super-pricey Bamboo), pen which has about the same size, heft, and nib. The pen has been flushed with cold water almost every time I've filled it. I want to simplify my life and pare down my possessions. I've owned or tried out about 30 high-quality, hefty pens over the last 30 years: Montblanc 149, Parker Duofold, Pelikan 1000, Sailor 1911, Omas, and so forth, some with modified nibs. The Pelikan 800 is by far the best for my hand--"hand" in two senses--physical hand and hand as in handwriting style. It feels substantial due to its smoothly operating brass innards. The nib is durable--not a lot of flex, but I don't need a flex for writing, and I use other pens for drawing.

I think this is the most well designed and most beautiful pen around, as well as the best writing instrument. Writing with this pen is a tactile delight, a sensory pleasure for me. The pen holds a lot of ink.

It can't use cartridges. The pen's line has flowed well with the six or seven black inks I've used over the years. Use only quality ink designed for fountain pens.

Don't try thick, waterproof india ink, or your pen will become the world's most expensive swizzle stick. Unless you're a skilled pen technician, don't try to remove or install a nib yourself. Leave it to the professionals. Please note that the Pelikan 800 nibs run a little larger than some nibs from other pen makers, especially Japanese pens. To me, this Pelikan 800 EF is more like a Japanese F.

If the pen isn't what you hoped for, feel free to return it. The item "PELIKAN M800 with 14k EF gold nib, black, gold trim, W.
